My life is made up of memories—childhood, teenage years, adulthood, friends, influences, and my hates as well. All these influence how I think and see things.

My starting point for exploring the past and present is a photographic self-portrait / this becomes an autobiographical journey / a reflection of my life through my own face, through the years and the people I have met / hated / admired / and married, and I incorporate specific events / times / places in my life. I then overlay / incorporate my face with that of others who have some has influenced me–sometimes positively and sometimes less so–but have all left their mark. Some of the connections are smooth fits whilst others are less happy. (I was surprised that Margaret Thatcher’s facial features were such a smooth fit!).

The “Self portrait as Michele” combines the image of my wife’s Italian uncle who died fighting the Germans at Monte Cassino on 17 May 1944 – the same day I was born. When I came to overlay the faces in the picture they were such an eerily smooth fit that I had to make one sepia and one black and white to differentiate them. That was a real hair rising on the back of the neck moment.

In my work certain themes re-occur, be they from my time as a student / my time living in Italy / coming from a small Scottish village / the cultural influences in art and music / the importance of home / and even Arsene Wenger (the Arsenal football club manager who one Sunday morning passed me by with his whole team on a stroll round Manchester) As I make a piece I might include world events happening (such as Mandela dying) or wildlife I see from my window (3 deer wandering through our garden / a flock of jackdaws eating our bird seed)  so that each composition tells a story of / comments upon my life and times but from a personal and unique perspective

I use the traditional method of cut and paste – no photoshopping!
